Hangzhou Normal University

Hangzhou Normal University (HZNU) is a provincial key public university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, with roots as a teacher-training institution and a present-day profile spanning education, medicine, science, engineering, humanities, arts and business. It is well known in China as the alma mater of Jack Ma and for its Alibaba Business School, alongside long-standing strength in teacher education and, more recently, biomedical and materials research. HZNU is not a Project 211 or 985 institution but holds several nationally recognised disciplines and has a large international-student population for a regional normal university.

The university was founded in 1908 as a teacher-training school in Hangzhou, one of the earlier modern teacher-education institutions in Zhejiang province. Through the twentieth century it expanded and merged with several other local institutions, broadening from pure teacher training into a comprehensive university, and adopted its present name, Hangzhou Normal University, as it gained university status. It has since grown a significant medical school and, since the 2010s, a business school built around its connection to Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group.

The main campus is located in Cangqian, Yuhang District, Hangzhou, with additional teaching sites in the city, including medical-school and business-school facilities. The campus supports education, medicine, science, engineering, arts and business disciplines with dedicated laboratories and teaching hospitals affiliated with the medical school. Student accommodation is provided in on-campus dormitories, and the Hangzhou location gives access to the city's technology and digital-economy sector.

International students live in dedicated on-campus apartments of different specifications. Rooms are equipped with a refrigerator, air conditioning, wireless internet and a private bathroom, and professional staff run daily management and services. Degree students pay for a single room once per academic year: RMB 7,000, 10,000 or 14,000 depending on the room (2025 fee schedule). Non-degree students are charged about RMB 40 to 45 per day, by semester or year. Fees change, so confirm the current schedule with the International Education College before applying.
