Introduction
Hangzhou City University is a public university in Gongshu District, Hangzhou, offering programmes across economics, law, liberal arts, history, science, engineering, medicine, management and art through thirteen schools and one Sino-foreign joint institute. It is a relatively young, newly independent institution it carries the lineage and academic culture of its founding partner, Zhejiang University, but is now a separately administered public university rather than a Zhejiang University college.
History
The university's predecessor, Zhejiang University City College, was jointly founded in July 1999 by Zhejiang University and the Hangzhou municipal government as an "independent college" model common in China at the time, combining a parent university's academic resources with local government funding. In January 2020, the Ministry of Education approved the restructuring of Zhejiang University City College into an independently run public university, Hangzhou City University, revoking the former college's dependent status. In August 2022 the university was further approved as a master's-degree-granting institution, a milestone that is sometimes cited alongside the earlier 2020 restructuring -- verify the precise sequence against the university's official history page before publishing.
Campus & facilities
The campus is located at Huzhou Street in Gongshu District, Hangzhou, covering roughly 68 hectares, with modern teaching buildings reflecting its recent transition to independent-university status. Student accommodation is provided in on-campus dormitories, and the Gongshu District location gives ready access to central Hangzhou and the city's technology and e-commerce industry corridor.
