Introduction

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is a provincial key public university in Guangzhou and one of China's leading institutions for foreign languages, international trade, business and law. It teaches more than twenty foreign languages alongside economics, international business, law, journalism and public administration, and is widely regarded as one of China's top language-and-trade universities, comparable in reputation to Beijing Foreign Studies University and Shanghai International Studies University. Its location in Guangdong -- China's largest trading province and a hub for Hong Kong, Macau and Greater Bay Area business -- gives it a strong practical orientation toward international commerce.

History

The university's lineage traces to the Guangzhou Foreign Languages Institute, founded in 1965, and the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade, founded in 1980. The two institutions merged in May 1995 to form Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, combining language education with international-trade and business training. The founding year used in this catalog reflects the earlier predecessor institute; the formal merger creating the present university took place in 1995 -- verify which date the university's own materials cite as authoritative before publishing.

Campus & facilities

The university operates two main campuses in Guangzhou -- Baiyun Mountain (Beishan) and Guangzhou University Town (Daxuecheng) -- with language laboratories, an interpretation-training centre, and dedicated facilities for international-trade simulation and negotiation training. Student accommodation is provided in on-campus dormitories at both campuses, and Guangzhou's role as a major trade and logistics hub gives students strong access to internships with import-export and multinational companies.
