Introduction
East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) is a leading specialist law university in Shanghai, among the first group of political-science-and-law institutions founded in the People's Republic. It is one of China's most influential law schools, with nationally top-ranked programmes in law, and additional strengths in political science, economics, management, journalism and foreign languages applied to legal practice. ECUPL is a major supplier of judges, prosecutors, lawyers and legal scholars in Shanghai and East China, and runs an extensive network of international partnerships and joint legal-studies programmes.
History
ECUPL was founded in 1952 by merging the law and political-science faculties of several universities in East China, on the former campus of St. John's University in Shanghai. It was suspended and re-established twice during political campaigns before resuming permanently in 1979. It adopted university status and its current English name in 2007 and has since expanded to a second campus in Songjiang while keeping its historic Changning site.
Campus & facilities
The university has two campuses: the historic Changning (Wanhangdu) campus beside Suzhou Creek, with early-20th-century academic buildings from the former St. John's University, and the larger modern Songjiang campus in Shanghai's university town. Facilities include moot courtrooms, legal-aid clinics, a large law library and specialist research centres. Both campuses have student accommodation and are connected to central Shanghai by metro.
