Introduction
Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is an elite national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education, and one of China's Project 985 and Project 211 universities -- placing it in the top tier of Chinese higher education alongside institutions such as Tsinghua and Peking University, well above the ordinary provincial-university tier of most catalog entries. It was selected into Category A of the Double First-Class Initiative in 2017. DUT is a comprehensive research university with particular strength in engineering, chemistry, naval architecture and ocean engineering, computer science and management, and it consistently ranks among the top 30-40 universities in China.
History
The university was founded in 1949, shortly after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, as a comprehensive engineering-focused institution in the port city of Dalian. It was designated a Project 211 university in 1996 and a Project 985 university in 2001, with the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province and Dalian City jointly funding its development. In 2017 it was named a Double First-Class Class A university, with several of its engineering and science disciplines recognised as world-class.
Campus & facilities
The main Linggong Road campus in Ganjingzi District, Dalian, is a large research campus with extensive engineering laboratories, a naval-architecture and ocean-engineering test facility, and modern science buildings; the university also operates a Kaifaqu (development-zone) campus and a Panjin campus in Liaoning. Student accommodation is provided in on-campus dormitories, and Dalian's coastal setting and status as a major economic and shipping centre give students strong access to internships and research partnerships.
