Introduction

Chongqing University of Chinese Medicine is a new public university in Chongqing, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2023 to consolidate the municipality's traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) teaching, hospital and research capacity into a single independent institution. It brings together the former College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Chongqing Medical University, the Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and municipal academies for Chinese materia medica and medicinal-plant cultivation. Programmes centre on Chinese medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, acupuncture and tuina, pharmacy of Chinese materia medica, and nursing.

History

The institution's roots lie in the Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Advanced Studies School founded in 1951. In 2001 the municipal TCM school was absorbed into Chongqing Medical University as its College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In June 2023 the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of an independent Chongqing University of Chinese Medicine by merging that college with affiliated TCM hospitals and research academies.
