Introduction

China University of Petroleum (East China) is a national key university in Qingdao, Shandong, and a Project 211 and Double First-Class institution under the Ministry of Education. It is China's leading university for petroleum and petrochemical engineering, geology and related energy disciplines, and also teaches mechanical, chemical, computer, materials, economics and management fields. This is the independently administered Qingdao (East China) campus, distinct from China University of Petroleum (Beijing) -- the two split into separately run universities after originating from the same parent institution, and should not be treated as branches of one another.

History

The university traces its founding to the Beijing Petroleum Institute, established in 1953 to train engineers for China's emerging oil and gas industry. In 1969 the institute relocated to Dongying, Shandong, becoming the East China campus, and the Beijing and East China operations were later formalised as separate universities. Relocation of the main campus to Qingdao began in 2004 and completed in 2012, after which the university adopted its present form as China University of Petroleum (East China), retaining a secondary campus in Dongying.

Campus & facilities

The main Qingdao campus sits in the city's university and high-tech district, with laboratories for drilling, reservoir engineering, petrochemical processing and offshore-energy research, plus a secondary campus in Dongying near the Shengli oilfield. Facilities support close collaboration with national oil companies on applied research. Student accommodation is provided in on-campus dormitories, with the Qingdao coastal setting distinguishing it from most other Chinese petroleum-engineering schools.
